41% Dissatisfied with Business Broadband

“Suddenly, always-on internet access became a realistic proposition for many UK companies, and over the past few years, with a combination of local loop unbundling and increased competition, everyone is at it. So, why are four in 10 businesses unhappy with their broadband connection?"

That is the finding from a survey on next-generation access from the Communications Management Association. The survey found that 41% of businesses using broadband were unable to receive the level of access they required owing to their geographic location.”

The Market it seems is crying out for UBM!

Comms Business Gives UBM The X(rio)-Factor

In todays Comms Business mail-shot, Editor Ian Hunter creates his dream line-up for a theoretical Reality TV show featuring comms' superstars stating "...in the final I would see the new kit from Leeds based Xrio. You are going to have to take my word on that one but you can check it out in our extensive interview with them in the January issue."

To get into the mood we've ordered Adam (Cowel) a pair of high waisted trousers, Juli (Minogue) is going for the perma-tanned look, Shelley (Cole) is starting a girl band and our very own Danny (Walsh) is practicing saying "I liked it."

Laws against file-sharing

Category: Industry News

The ability to upload content has resulted in a number of file sharing amongst Internet users. However, some Internet users are abusing their right to upload content by sharing copyright material. This has affected many business industries with the music industry being perhaps the most common example.

Users that upload copyright material and making it publicly available can be traced through their IP address, details of which are accessible from their ISP. With evidence not too far away it is possible for owners of copyright products to take legal action against suspected file sharers.

In order for proceedings to begin, the evidence needs to be given or collected from the ISP by the copyright owner that is prosecuting. However, customer as confidential customer information is protected by the data protection act and can only be disclosed on the grounds of what is stated in the act.

The European Court of Justice has ruled that ISPs do not have to disclose personal data of those sharing files over their networks in civil cases.
Recently the peer-to-peer website Pirate Bay has reached headlines as arrests were made due to accusations of infringements of copyright laws.

International ISP outage

Category: Industry News

Due to the loss of a crucial undersea Internet cable, networks were brought down affecting people and organisations across the Middle East and South Asia.

The outage that continued for several hours disrupted many businesses with companies suffering from loss of productivity levels and incurring financial loss. Customers were also affected and advised to limit Internet usage and refrain from applications that require more bandwidth in order to reduce the impact on businesses.

However, this was not the full scale of the impact as people around the world in contact with the two regions were also likely to be affected. Businesses may have been unable to communicate with their International suppliers, customers or even office branches through Internet applications such as email, VoIP and VPN, etc.

The Internet has fast become a part of everyday life and an important asset to organisations and employees. But despite the increase in dependency on the Internet, technology can sometimes be unreliable. Internet Outages are unpredictable and the extent of an outage cannot be measured. However, in order to avoid such outages, organisations do require a business continuity plan.

The Xrio UBM reduces the impact of ISP outages with its failover and high availability features to ensure a back-up and continuous Internet connection.
